The insideoutliers are a group of three musicians passionate about creating a sound that transcends genres. Our mission is to engage with our audience through powerful melodies and dynamic performances that leave a lasting impression.

Our music is 100% improvised and is about as far from Artificial Intelligence as you can get :-)

We are an exploratory trio using hypnotic beats and solid bass lines to unearth the weird and unusual sounds of the Inside-Out Piano which is a unique piano designed by Sarah Nicolls and here played in its virtual form.

Sarah Nicolls (piano) is an innovative pianist and composer and has been a soloist in the PRSF New Music Biennial and Matthew Herbert’s 20 Pianos project and is regularly broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and elsewhere. She has premiered multiple piano concertos with orchestras like the London Sinfonietta and ASKO/Schonberg Ensemble. She invented the ‘Inside-out Piano’, a sculptural feast of an instrument which stands 2.5m tall, designed to enable ‘inside piano’ playing. Sarah Nicolls has been innovating as a pianist since winning the British Contemporary Piano Competition in 2000. Her programme of piano re-invention continues with her company First Light Pianos. Sarah is also a Visiting Senior Research Fellow in Music and Engineering at King’s College and has developed a virtual instrument of her ‘Inside-Out Piano’, now available from Song Athletics. Sarah will be playing this amazing new instrument in the InsideOutliers.
 

James Eller (bass) is a highly regarded session bassist and composer. Best known for anchoring iconic records and tours for The The, he has played with many artists including: Julian Cope, Kirsty MacColl, Banco De Gaia, Billy Bragg, and Damien Saez

 

Charlie Grimsdale (drums) Producer/Engineer/Drummer aka xskarma, creates solid grooves which blend the sounds of jazz, soul, funk and hip-hop.
